We also advise loosely wrapping cables, rather than folding or otherwise aggressively bending them. Tight coils and folds can damage the metal wires inside the cable, causing it to work improperly or not at all. The hook-and-loop (that is, Velcro) fasteners that some companies toss in with their cables (including many of our picks) are useful for this purpose since they allow a loosely coiled cable to hold its shape for compact storage. We have more tips for safely storing cables in our guides to the best bag and cable organizers and the best gear for organizing your desk.

Eventually, though, even the sturdiest and most scrupulously cared-for charging cables will reach their end of days. When that happens, the best thing to do is recycle them. Since recycling facilities salvage usable components from old electronics, rather than mining and manufacturing the materials needed to make new ones, this simple action can help conserve natural resources, reduce emissions, and avoid polluting soil and water systems.

The Amazon Basics Lightning to USB-A Cable (6 feet) used to be a budget pick in this guide, but a CNN investigation found that it and numerous other Amazon Basics products are prone to explode, catch on fire, or begin smoking, melting, or causing electrical malfunctions. After evaluating Amazon customer reviews of this cable and similar models (including our pick in this category), we no longer recommend this cable due to a high percentage of reports related to fire, heat, and melting.

The Fire Stick 4K Max is the best option to choose for video quality, speed, and performance. According to Amazon, its latest Fire TV Stick model is 50% faster than the previous generation, which means smoother streaming and less loading.

Hello, recently, i bought a firewire 400 cable to connect my iBook G3 to my PowerMac G4 MDD, to transfer files too large to for my flash drive. The cable finally arrived today, and I set the iBook to restart into target disk mode in system preferences, and connected the cable to both computers, it rebooted, and showed a yellow firewire logo, on a blue screen. However, My Powermac G4 never found the iBook, I tried connecting the cable to both of the firewire ports on the Logic board, and the other two on my expansion card, but nothing, it couldn't find the iBook, not even in disk utility. I also tried putting the PowerMac into Target disk mode, and the iBook couldn't reconize it. I'm not too farmilier as to how to use target disk mode, but it seems i did everything right. I also tried removing the expansion card in the PMG4, but still nothing, I don't have any other devices to test the cable. I also have a couple other cards in the powermac (SCSI, Sound) should I remove those as well? Did I forget anything to get this too work?

Above $2500 cameras tend to become increasingly specialized, making it difficult to select a 'best' option. We case our eye over the options costing more than $2500 but less than $4000, to find the best all-rounder.

Either type of smoke detector, whether battery-powered or hard-wired, will increase your chance of living through a house fire by more than 50%. Between the two types, hard-wired smoke detectors continue to operate in house fires 12% more than with battery-powered detectors.

A fire in one part of the house concerns everyone in all parts of the house. With most battery-powered smoke detectors, a unit in one part of the house may detect a fire long before other units kick in.

Hard-wired smoke detectors are interconnected. When one detector sounds, all detectors connected on the same wire will sound. Interconnected smoke alarms increase safety by giving residents extra time to react in those crucial few moments when a fire is still in its early, smouldering stage.

Some battery-powered smoke detector models can be interconnected without wires. A group of wireless smoke detectors can create its own wireless alarm network, without the need to route through a Wi-Fi system.

Still, wired interconnectivity is more reliable than wireless. Wireless units are limited by distance. Plus, their radio signals can be hampered by walls or by other devices within the house that can interfere with the signals.

Hard-wired smoke detectors are increasingly being required by local codes for new construction. Your area may or may not require that you upgrade an existing home to hard-wired smoke detectors. Consult with your local permitting authority for clarification.

Apple has recently been making announcements that seem, well, poorly thought-out to put it kindly. When it announced that it would be adding a lossless audio option for every single track on Apple Music, it also acknowledged that none of its wireless AirPod line of earbuds and headphones is currently compatible with the new format.

Walk up to a wall of HDMI cables at your local electronics store or browse your online outlet of choice and you'll see all manner of brands claiming their cables offer better picture and sound quality than the competition. Indeed, there is perhaps no consumer electronics segment more riddled with marketing voodoo and misinformation than the cable and wire industry. It's nearly impossible not to be coerced into spending premium dollars in the pursuit of the best possible experience. But is there really a difference between expensive HDMI cables and budget offerings? We asked an expert to find out.

After researching dozens of smoke detectors, we bought the 11 best models available today and tested them side-by-side to help you find the perfect addition to your home. We extensively compared and evaluated all the different features and functions, looking at how they sense smoke and any other emergency features they might have, as well as the amount of work it took to install each one. Check out the full review to see which hardwired or battery-powered alarm is the best option for you, regardless of if you are looking for a top-tier model packed with smart features, the start of an interconnected alarm system, or a basic budget option.

If you don't have a hardwired detector system and have always wanted to add a series of interconnected alarms, then the Kidde 21026044 Wireless is a great option. This battery-powered alarm is straightforward to install, with a series of eight switches on the back that let you select a unique wireless code for your alarm system. Any other alarm set with the same code will automatically go off when any interconnected alarm is activated. However, there is a limit of 24 total Kidde devices, with 18 being units that trigger an alarm (12 can be smoke alarms). Many building codes require an interconnected alarm system for new construction. This model's wireless interconnectivity could be a much easier and less expensive option than running wires throughout your home. 041b061a72
